Oil pumping up the airline from the differential should not occur. It can be caused by a number of potential problems, some are general fitting issues and others are specific for a vehicle application. I will try to cover the most likely causes for this particular case.

Insufficient preload would be the first point to check. With shim adjusted diffs (such as RD60 and RD47), it is important to ensure that a diff spreader was used and that the locker was fitted with sufficient preload. Basically when a differential of any type is fitted there needs to be a certain amount of preload so that when torque is applied to the differential and subsequently the housing expands, that there isn’t then a gap created. When this occurs with a locker fitted, it can cause an airleak (the compressor would start up again) and can also cause differential oil to be pumped past the seal housings and up the airline eventually to the compressor. The vehicle’s workshop manual in conjunction with the Air Locker fitting instructions list what the preload must be for an application and how to achieve this with our shims.

You can check if it is preload related by applying torque to the differential to see if the compressor starts pumping again (ie engage compressor and locker, push accelerator at same time as brake to apply torque to axle and listen for the compressor to start up again).

Other parts of the installation process to check would be ensuring that they have profiled the copper tube inside the differential so that it isn’t touching the ring gear and has plenty of tubing as per the fitting instruction images to ensure that the seal housing is able to float freely. Otherwise the seal housing can be pushed off centre and cause a leak. Similarly if the seal housing o-rings have been installed twisted, this too can cause oil to escape past and be pumped back up the line.

Finally if you have to take out the locker to check the installation, it is worth checking the surface on the bearing journal surface of the locker (where the bearing/seal housing sits) to ensure that it isn’t scratched/damaged. If this surface is damaged (can be done when installation of the bearings) you may need to replace the cylinder cap of the locker to prevent the oil pumping.

I have also attached a list of potential causes for oil pumping specifically for Toyota axles but can be useful for any differential installation generally.
